MARANATHA
Hesych. Μαραναθὰ, ὁ Κύριος ἦλθεν, ἢεἶδον τὸν Κύριον. Vide Suidam. Syriaca vox est, et significat, Dominus venit. 1 Cor. c. 16. v. 22. Si quis non amat Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum, sit anathema maranatha. Id est, exponente Theodoretô, Sit alienus a communi corpore Ecclesiae. Idem nempe est quod Anathema, seu Excommunicatio maior, apud Graecos Latinosque, et Shammata, apud Hebraeos, quô genere excommunicationis arcebantur peccatores â communione fidelium, omnique iis commerciô cum illis interdicebatur, velut excisis, donec resipiscerent. Ut frustra sint, qui inter Anathema et Maranatha destinguentes, ex Synodo Turon. II. c. 25. A. C. 570. Ut non solum excommunicatus, sed etiam anathematizatus moriatur; hâc posteriore voce denotari volunt Excommunicationem, quâ etiam in vitae fine in gratiam recipi petentes illam non impetrent. divino Iudicio committendi. Neque enim illud discrimen anterioribus saeculis usitatum occurrit, nec ipsi hi Patres hanc sententiam in quemquam tulisse leguntur: licet, ut homines a sacrilega et pertinaci bonorum Ecclsiasticorum direptione ac detentione absterreant, istiusmodi maledictionem illis comminentur. Augustin. certe Ep. 28. de his verbis sic ait: Simul Graecô et Syrô utitur verbô Apostolus: Si quis non amat Dominum, sit A. nathema, Maranatha. Anathema Graecô sermone dixit, condemnatus; Maranatha, donec Dominus redeat. Et sunt Eruditi, qui dicant, Hebraeos, quando illud Excommunicationis genus, quod Shammata (eiusdem ferme notionis cum Maranatha) stringebant, usurpasse illa Enochi verba, Ecce venit Dominus etc. Ep. Iudae v. 15. et. 16. ut hâo formulâ reos terrerent adventus Domini ad Iudicium contra rebelles denuntiatione; eoque respexisse Paulum, quando Christum non diligentibus interminatus est Anathema Maranatha loc. cit.
